To me it was enormously cathartic to break out of the confines of Harrows trauma and get to spend some time with straightforward Gideon and her nonstop quips, and it helped make the rest of the book feel more balanced. The way that the cavalier-necromancer relationship plays out between the Eighth House, with Silas and Colum, is totally different yet again to the way that it plays out in the Sixth House with Camilla and Palamedes. It wasnt that I was unaware of the events going on in my life, but it was like they were happening to somebody else. Harrow's family died by suicide upon discovering her heretical trespass; Harrow has been burdened with secretly leading the Ninth House for years. Spoilers for Gideon the Ninth (but none for its sequel Harrow the Ninth) follow. Theres a plot reason for this move: Harrow has worked out that if she has no knowledge of Gideon, then she wont be able to fully absorb Gideons soul, and as a result Gideon wont be completely gone forever. I always feel really embarrassed when I get asked this question because I wish I had a more intelligent answer. I love stories where the protagonists realize that they have inadvertently stumbled into somebody elses much older, weirder story. WebGideon the Ninth starts off a little slow but picks up steam steadily, becoming increasingly multi-layered and compelling as it propels the reader toward an intense, heart-pounding Harrow wakes up on the Emperor's flagship; she and a wounded Ianthe are the only confirmed survivors of Canaan House. Meanwhile, the Third House's heiress, Ianthe Tridentarius, deduces how Lyctors are created: a necromancer must extract and devour their cavalier's soul, allowing them to use the soul as a virtually infinite power source and gaining the cavalier's combat skills. Now what? Classically, bathtub scenes are a great equalizer. All the weird, all the violence, all the rebellious snark and darkness live in that one line. The set-up is genius: In some (possibly distant, possibly ancient, probably super-far-future) corner of the universe exist nine ancient houses with nine rulers and heirs adept in different forms of gooey, death-obsessed magic. That makes the scene an example of Bathtub Bonding, one of the romantic staples of Japanese pop culture. You get a lot of magic systems that are more intuitive and less about scholarship. I loved, for instance, the episodes of Lost where the main characters suddenly discovered they were trapped in the middle of a great game played out between immortal brothers who represented good and evil. Harrow is haunted by the hundreds of innocent deaths involved in her creation. It becomes apparent that each House's necromancer and cavalier must work together to complete the puzzles in the basement, so Harrow and Gideon begrudgingly ally. He did not. They are the kind of books that hardly anyone seems to feel neutrally about: You either despise them or adore them passionately. Are those two things necessarily tied? Ive had to guard myself a couple of times, being like, Im going to reach into something more feminine for X character or Y character. Why the hell am I limiting myself? And then in the last one with the coffeeshop AU, theres maybe the worst pun Ive ever done, but I dont even care. So I wanted to ask about what your goal and thought process was when creating such a tone for the story.. While Gideon finds a way to turn that betrayal briefly into a transcendent sacrifice, the power dynamics of her relationship with Harrow add an icky kind of subtext to that sacrifice. All of which combines to make Harrow the Ninth, for me, a richer book than Gideon the Ninth, but one that is also much harder to love. But I felt like the coffeeshop AU was slightly too much. Anytime Molly bleeds, a new version of Molly sprouts from her blood and tries to kill her, and so the real Molly has to murder them. Harrow initially treats Gideon as a liability and disappears for long periods of time to work on her own, leaving Gideon to wander Canaan House and interact with the other Houses. The one thing that you have to retain is being able to celebrate you and your achievements, not as contrasted to anybody elses. But you know, whatever Harrow thinks of sex is really weird anyway. You had always been afraid of anyone touching you, and had not known your longing flinch was so obvious to those who tried it. Theres a hell of a lot of references to Greek mythology, to Homer, to The Iliad. Large chunks of the novels first half are given over to Harrow and Gideon (mostly Harrow) attempting to convince the rest of their party at Canaan House that they know what they are doing and that they come from a house as wealthy and powerful as anyone elses. (It is absolute torture that we have to wait until 2022 for it to come out.) The truth is that I am just a very referential writer. She needed to be somebody who really had to work for it. Harrow and Gideon dont have to kiss for us to know their relationship is romantic. And Muir pretty much pulls it off because she makes the choice to use it to pay off on an emotional level as well as a plot level. Something went wrong.
